Hot Wax vs Soft Wax - What's the Difference?

If you've ever had a wax and wondered why some treatments feel gentler than others, the answer often comes down to the type of wax used. At Wellness Lounge we choose the wax based on the area being treated and your skin - and here's how it works.

What is hot wax?

Hot wax - also called hard wax - is applied warm and thick, then left to cool and set before being lifted off without strips. As it cools, it shrinks and grips the hair rather than the skin.

This makes it ideal for sensitive areas like the bikini line, underarms, and face. Because it clings to the hair and not the skin, it's gentler and often less painful on delicate areas.

What is soft wax?

Soft wax is applied in a thin layer and removed using a fabric strip. It's excellent for larger areas like legs, arms, and back, where it can cover more surface quickly and efficiently.

Soft wax removes very fine hairs effectively, giving a smooth finish across bigger areas.

Which is more painful?

Hot wax is generally more comfortable on sensitive areas because it grips only the hair. Soft wax is efficient on larger areas but can feel slightly more intense because it adheres to the skin as well. A skilled therapist makes a significant difference either way.

Which lasts longer?

Both remove hair from the root, so results typically last 3-4 weeks. Regular waxing over time can lead to finer, sparser regrowth.

Which is right for me?

The good news is you don't have to choose - at Wellness Lounge we select the right wax for each area during your treatment. Hot wax for delicate areas, soft wax for larger ones, always with your comfort in mind.

How should I prepare for a wax?

Hair should be at least a few millimetres long - around two weeks of growth. Avoid sunbathing or exfoliating immediately before your appointment, and let us know if you're using any retinol or acids on the skin.
